Beckham Debuts Tomorrow

I’m not a huge fan of soccer, David Beckham or Beatles songs, but I thought the combination of all three made for a pretty sweet commercial:

I’ll be watching the Braves and Cardinals tomorrow night during Beckham’s MLS debut, but I’m intrigued enough that I’ll probably record the game.

It will be interesting to see how much of an impact he has on soccer in the United States—will we ever really care about it?

I like the Beatles.

Clay,

I actually like the Beatles as well—when I said I wasn’t a huge fan, I more meant that I’m not obsessed with them.

While it is hard to exaggerate the impact that their music had, I think their music itself is a little overrated.

I would hope that people would begin to care more about soccer, although I doubt that many will. It doesn't give you 6 points for getting in to a 50 x 10 yard rectangle with the ball, or let you score 30 points in a game, and with American's needs to see huge scores to be interested, soccer overall doesn't appeal to those who don't understand the game. While it will certainly never have the ability to displace the sports of baseball, basketball, and American football here in the States, Beckham's impact, in my opinion, will be significant. Professional soccer is here to stay as a sport in the US, and while it won't have the mass appeal it does everywhere else in the world, Beckham's contribution in terms of simply getting people to tune in to a game to see who he is, won't hurt the league (you possibly recording the game is case in point). And perhaps, with him here, it will bring in other big named players earlier in their careers, which will only enhance the reputation and competitiveness of the league in general. I'm actually quite disappointed in myself for not mentioning this in my own blog, as the self-proclaimed soccer fanatic that I am. Shame on me.
